Eugene Andrew Cernan (1934- 2017) was an American astronaut, naval aviator, electrical engineer, aeronautical engineer, and fighter pilot. During the Apollo 17 mission, he became the eleventh person to walk on the Moon. Since he re-entered the Apollo Lunar Module after fellow astronaut Harrison Schmitt on their third and final lunar excursion, he is the last person to have walked on the Moon.
Cernan traveled into space three times; as pilot of Gemini 9A in June of 1966, as lunar module pilot of Apollo 10 in May 1969, and as commander of Apollo 17 in December 1972. Cernan was also a backup crew member of the Gemini 12, Apollo 7 and Apollo 14 space missions. His career came to fruition during the most dangerous and exciting period of space exploration and spanned the entirety of Gemini and Apollo missions.
The Last Man on the Moon is a story about the sacrifice and passion that the NASA astronauts put into their travels to the Moon. The book incorporates Cernan’s personal experiences with New York Times bestselling author Davis’s literary mastery.
