This is a first edition of Robert Lee Scott, Jr.’s Flying Tiger: Chennault of China. Scott signed and inscribed this book twice. Published in 1959 by Doubleday & Company, the book features two black and white maps on the inside of both front and back boards. The book features its original dust jacket and is presented in a custom archival slipcase.
Famous for his leadership in the face of overwhelming odds, Claire Chennault put together one of the most effective aviation units of all time. Scott’s book tells the story of Chennault’s impactful career that resulted in the formation of the famed Flying Tigers. Scott focuses mainly on Chennault and the accomplishments of the Flying Tigers and ends with the development of the CAT airlift taking supplies to Chinese communist-beseiged villages. Otherwise known as the First American Volunteer Group aiding China in its conflict against invading Japan, the Flying Tigers were given the nick name largely because of the large-toothed smile on the nose of their planes. The group not only was created secretly by an order of President Roosevelt, but were also responsible for destroying almost 300 enemy airplanes and were highly active in the Pacific theater after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Today, Chennault, his men, and the shark-toothed planes are some of the most celebrated military symbols of the Second World War.
Overall very good condition. The black boards have some minor bumping. The pages are clean and have a deckled fore edge. The book’s original dust jacket has some rubbing and two small blue stains, but is now in a protective mylar cover. The book is housed in a matching red archival custom made slipcase decorated with a photo of Chennault set into a recess.
