The book was published in 1970 out of Boston by Little, Brown, and Company. The book includes an epilogue by Arthur C. Clarke and many photographs throughout.

The book describes the famous Apollo 11 voyage into space on July 20th 1969, where the three named astronauts were the first to successfully complete a manned landing on the moon. There have been six manned U.S. landings (between 1969 and 1972) and numerous unmanned landings. To date, the United States is the only country to have successfully conducted manned missions to the Moon, with the last departing the lunar surface in December 1972. The book goes into great detail of this feat, from the earliest preparations to the final touchdown back on Planet Earth.

Dora Jane Hamblin was a gifted writer who wrote for Life magazine during its heyday. One of her projects, from February 1967 to December 1969, was to cover the cutting-edge U.S. space program from Houston. She conducted interviews with astronauts and their families to gain accurate information for her writing. She was able to explain the brand new space technology in a comprehensive yet approachable way for her readers, who were fascinated. her articles lead to this book, written with Gene Farmer. The two authors collaborated with the astronauts themselves to produce a true and accurate representation of the Apollo 11 mission.
