Hemingway (1899-1961) was an American author and journalist. His distinctive writing style, characterized by economy of words and dry understatement, strongly influenced 20th-century fiction. Hemingway wrote most of his work between the 1920s and the 1950s, winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.
Despite his fame as a fictional short story writer and his love of drama, Hemingway’s Death in the Afternoon is a nonfiction work exploring Spanish culture and the tradition of bullfighting. Written as part personal essay and part historical analysis, Hemingway explains the modern sport "emotionally and practically” for an audience of American readers.
Hemingway first visited Spain after serving in WWI. He fell in love with the country and developed a fascination with bullfighting and its ceremonies. Hemingway took annual trips to Pamplona, where bullfights were held in connection with the religious festival of San Fermín.
