Fleming, Ian. Casino Royale. London: Jonathan Cape, 1953. First edition, first issue. In original dust jacket and black boards. Octavo. Presented in a spectacular quarter leather and cloth clamshell case.
This is the first edition of Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, Casino Royale. The book is presented in its original black boards, with red titles to spine and heart motif to the front book cover, as well as the original striking dust jacket design.
The book was first published by Jonathan Cape in London on April 13, 1953. Cape printed 4,728 copies of Casino Royale, which sold out in less than a month. A second print run the same month also sold out, as did a third run of more than 8,000 books published in May 1954. The sales figures for this book were strong enough for Jonathan Cape to offer Fleming a three-book deal.
In the United States, three publishers turned the book down before Macmillan Publishing Co. offered Fleming a deal. Casino Royale was published on March 23, 1954 in the US, but US book sales were poor, totaling only 4,000 copies across the entire US during the course of the year.
Casino Royale follows Bond as he attempts, over a game of cards, to ruin evil banker and KGB member Le Chiffre. The book also introduces the characters of Vesper Lynd and Felix Leiter. Fleming wrote the book in just two months from his estate in Jamaica.
Ian Fleming (1908–1964) was an intelligence officer, journalist, and creator of the fictional British Secret service agent James Bond. Beginning in 1939 he served as a liaison between the Navy and the other secret services, where he was privy to the highest levels of intelligence and became known for his creativity in planning operations, work that inspired his later novels.
After the war, Fleming became a journalist and in 1953 published his first James Bond novel, Casino Royale. It was a success, and Fleming wrote a new book each year until his untimely death in 1964.
