Written in the form of a first-person narrative told from the perspective of a horse, the novel follows the life of Black Beauty from his early years on a peaceful English farm through a succession of owners of varying kindness and cruelty. Sewell used the narrative to advocate for the humane treatment of horses, at a time when they were central to transportation and labor in Victorian society. Although initially intended for adult readers concerned with animal welfare, the work quickly became popular with younger audiences.

Anna Sewell (1820–1878) was born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. As a young woman she suffered a severe ankle injury that left her permanently disabled and largely confined to her home. As a result, Sewell relied heavily on horse-drawn transport and developed a deep sympathy for the animals. She spent the final years of her life composing Black Beauty, dictating portions of the manuscript while in fragile health. The novel was published only months before her death in April of 1878. Sewell did not live to witness its extraordinary success. The book became a landmark in the history of animal welfare literature and remains one of the best-selling works of children’s fiction ever published.

CONDITION:

Good condition.
