This antique wooden pond yacht was built in 1910 and would have been raced on British ponds. Model, or pond, yachting was the pastime of building and racing model yachts. It was customary for ship builders to make a miniature model of their vessels while their larger vessels were under construction. These small models were, in every respect, a copy of the original on a small scale, whether steamship or sailing ship. In the case of sailing yachts, these models were often pitted against each other on small bodies of water and British ponds and pond yachting arose to be a popular early 20th century pastime.
There are fine collections to be seen at both historical museums, like the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and at many specialized maritime museums worldwide. Many of these models are of exquisite workmanship, every rope, pulley or portion of the engine being faithfully reproduced.
Good condition overall. Wooden yacht. The yacht is rigged with a full suit of linen and cotton sails.
