Presented is a late 19th century edition of A Narrative of the Voyages Round the World Performed by Captain James Cook by Andrew Kippis. This illustrated volume was published in London by Bickers and Sons, in 1878. It is presented here in the original publisher’s attractive green cloth boards, with the front board and spine elaborately stamped in pictorial black and gilt. The interior boasts twelve large black and white engravings of Cook’s travels.
James Cook was a British naval captain, navigator, and explorer who sailed the seaways and coasts of Canada (1759 and 1763–67) and conducted three expeditions to the Pacific Ocean (1768–71, 1772–75, and 1776–79). He traveled throughout the Pacific, from the Antarctic ice fields to the Bering Strait and from the coasts of North America to Australia and New Zealand.
This account of the life and voyages of James Cook was written by Andrew Kippis, an 18th-century English author, historian, and clergyman. First published in 1788, Kippis’ biography of Cook was celebrated for his descriptions of Cook’s expeditions and personal character, as well as the lasting effects of his voyages and discoveries to the fields of geography, anthropology, and natural history. Kippis compiled his narrative by reviewing Cook's journals and the recorded accounts of his voyages. In addition to this biography, Kippis regularly contributed to the Gentleman’s Magazine and the Monthly Review, founded the New Annual Register, and edited five volumes of the Biographia Britannica.
