The different types of track illustrate the extraordinary diversity of rail transportation that developed to overcome Colorado's rugged mountain terrain. Throughout the map, red overprinted notes provide extra historical or engineering commentary, identifying rail passes, gorges, and offering descriptions of the track routes, like \"first railroad abandoned in Colorado, 1877,\" \"53 miles, no curves,\" and \"lowest point in Colorado.\" \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003eCartographically, the map also presents an excellent view of the river systems and mountainous terrain of the state, through orange shading and blue waterways. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSurrounding the main map are seven vignette illustrations of various locomotives and fifteen smaller regional maps. Following service during the Second World War, he returned to the magazine and served as its editor from 1946 until his retirement in 1978, transforming it into the leading publication for model railroad enthusiasts in North America.
