1894 "Abraham Lincoln" Lithographic Portrait, after Cyrus Cobb
Presented is a lithographic portrait of Abraham Lincoln, after the American artist Cyrus Cobb. The print was published by the Taber Prong Art Company, of Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1894. A stately seated portrait, Lincoln is depicted in a black coat, vest, with a crisp white shirt and bow tie.
This lithograph is typical of the portraits of Lincoln issued after his death, when demand for images of the late president dramatically increased. In the North, many families hung Lincoln's portrait in prominent spots in their homes. Stately yet somber portraits of the great leader were published as affordable engravings or lithographs so the American public could collectively mourn their lost leader. Many of the portraits commemorated his legacy, with allegorical or symbolic references to his accomplishments and laws passed, like the Emancipation Proclamation.
The artist's printed signature is in the lower right corner of the image, and "Copyright 1894 by the Taber Art Co." is also printed on the image.
