W. Locke

Presented is an 1862 Civil War song sheet by E. W. Locke. The folio broadside sheet includes two songs, “McClellan is Our Man” and “Song of the Volunteers," as well as several stanzas from “We’re Marching Down to Dixine’s Land.” The songs were written by Elbridge W. Locke (1818-1900), who gave morale-building performances to Union troops throughout the Civil War, and published in Maine.

On the left is the song "McClellan is our Man. A Union Song." Set to the tune of the popular parlor song, "A Little More Cider Too," the upbeat folk melody was frequently used as a template for political and comical song parodies. With 9 stanzas, “McClellan is Our Man” celebrates various Union victories, with references to gun boat victories, Ericsson and the Ironclads, and foes like Stonewall Jackson and Beauregard. Important Union leaders like Foote, Ericsson, Burnside, Porter, Farragut are noted as "our man," but special attention is given to McClellan, whose celebratory stanzas start and end the song. At bottom left, is stanza 6 and stanza 7 of another song by Locke, "We're Marching Down to Dixie's Land."

At right is "Song of the Volunteers" by "E. W. Locke, Army Poet and Balladist." Just below the song title is a striking printed illustration of an eagle, standing on a Union shield; the shield is laying on the ground, with rocks, grass, and a few plants. The eagle clutches three arrows in its talon, as it looks to the left. A six stanza song, "Song of the Volunteers" is a riff on the famous "Battle Hymn of the Republic." It is a stirring call to action, calling on Union volunteers to answer the bugle's call and join the fight. Featuring the rousing refrain "Glory, Glory Hallelujah," the lyrics express patriotism, devotion to the flag, and confidence in victory, while also honoring fallen comrades and remembering loved ones left at home. References to the Rappahannock River and "Father Abraham," a popular nickname for Abraham Lincoln, indicate the song was likely written for Union soldiers in the eastern campaigns in Virginia.

CONDITION:

Very good+ condition.
