Comprising Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Western Territory, and Part of Missouri" this map was published in The Royal Illustrated Atlas of Modern Geography. From 1854 to 1862, A. Fullarton & Co., of Edinburgh, London, and Dublin, published The Royal Illustrated Atlas of Modern Geography in 27 parts. The maps in the Royal Illustrated Atlas were both lithographed and steel plate engraved, delivering delicate yet exact line work. Centered on Indian Territory and Texas, this map shows town names, rivers, and travel and rail routes. The map identifies one railroad between Galveston and Houston, which extends to Austin with a spur to Washington. No other railroads are shown. San Antonio is the tiny village “S. Antonio de Bexar. Dallas is named, just four years after its incorporation. Northwest of Austin on the River Llano, Swanston has noted "German Settlements." Cartographically, there is excellent detail throughout the map of rivers and streams, indicated in blue. Swanston credits the map’s cartography "According to Calvin, Smith and Tanner".
