Jer Falcon Hand-Colored Etching by Prideaux Shelby, Circa 1821-1833

Prideaux John Shelby was a Scotsman and talented artist that showed a keen interest in ornithology from an early age and made his own notes and careful, colored drawings of the birds in his district... his main interests were ornithology, forestry, and entomology.  Selby's definitive publication, "Illustrations of British Ornithology", was published in nineteen parts between 1821 and 1833.  It contained some 222 plates etched by Selby (mostly after his own drawings) with the assistance of his brother-in-law Admiral Robert Mitford.

This is a first edition hand-colored engraving (Plate No. 14) from the original folio of Ilustrations of British Ornithology, 1821-1834, the paper is watermarked "1820/ J.Whatman/Turkey Mill".  The actual sheet size is  24 3/4 in. x 20 1/2 in.
