"Plan of the City of Washington" with Original Covers, by William Elliot, Circa 1829

This is an 1829 engraved and hand-colored booklet map of Washington City (Washington, D.C.) by William Elliot. The map was printed by O. H. Throop and engraved by William City.  

The map depicts the plan of the City of Washington, seat of government of the United States. It shows block numbers, wards, existing and planned government buildings. To the left of the map is a table listing prominent buildings, churches, and new businesses, with their corresponding block number. 

This map was first published by S. A. Elliot in 1822, this impression is the the second edition print, created in 1829 by William Elliot. As the city developed throughout the 1820s, a new map was necessary to reflect this booming growth. Consequently, the plate was updated and republished. 

CONDITION:

Beautifully presented with attached original book using the finest archival materials and procedures. It is printed on thin banknote paper. the map is accented with hand colored outlines and highlights in blue, pink and yellow. The unframed size of the map 14.7"x 18.9"; mounted in green portfolio booklet with gilt lettering "Washington City".
