1964 Pictorial Map of Long Island by Catherine & E. Theodore Nelson

Presented is a colorful and whimsical pictorial map of Long Island. The map was illustrated and published by creative husband and wife duo Catherine Nelson and E. Theodor Nelson in St. James, New York, in 1964. The map is a photo-process print and is mounted on its original wooden rollers.

The map is richly decorated throughout with illustrations meant to entice interest in Long Island. Trees, local plants, a painter, hunter, tennis players, and boats, as well as larger vignettes of historic buildings and famous people populate the map. The cartouche features a large anchor and treasure chest. A mermaid to the left of the cartouche picks a crab out of the water. The decorative border features silhouettes of birds, fish, and trees.

Einar Theodor Nelson (1897-1964) was born in Brooklyn to Swedish parents and attended Brooklyn Manual High School. He and his wife, Catherine H. Nelson (1914-2008), had an illustration studio in St. James, New York, on Long Island. After his death in 1964, Catherine continued to operate Nelson Studio. Nelson Studio published historical pictorial maps of Long Island and of the towns of Valley Stream, East Hampton, Bridgehampton and Southampton.
