1719 Hand-Colored Map of France by John Senex

“A New Map of France, Showing the Roads & Post Stages Throughout That Kingdom, as Also the Errors of Sanson's Map...”

This elegant map of France is divided into provinces with emphasis on the roads and postal routes. The stunning title cartouche at bottom left notes that the map corrects Sanson's map with data from a recent survey ordered by the late King Louis XIV. There is a small inset map of part of the coastline of Catalonia at bottom right.

John Senex (1678-1740) was an English cartographer, explorer, and master engraver. He worked as an editor and seller of antique maps and created multiple pocket-sized maps during his career, often including detailed points of elevation.
