In this classic retelling of the story of Cain and Abel, Steinbeck claimed the novel “has everything in it I have been able to learn about my art or craft or profession in all these year. I think everything else I have written has been, in a sense, practice for this” (Salinas Public Library, 45).

This first edition novel is in its rare first state, with the confirmed point on pp. 281. The novel has been rebound by hand in dark green quarter leather with gilt and raised spine, marbled endpapers, and top edge gilt. The volume is housed in a custom cloth slipcase featuring an inlaid portrait of the Nobel Prize-winning author.


This first edition novel is rebound in green quarter Moroccan leather and cloth boards. The spine features raised bands and gilt tooling. Pages are in good condition with minimal staining throughout.  Beautifully housed in a custom green cloth slipcase with a photo of the author on one side.
