George Orwell, born Eric Arthur Blair, was a famous novelist, essayist, and critic. After being refused to serve in WWI, he instead headed the Indian service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). Orwell was also a literary editor for the Tribune, a left-wing socialist paper aligning with his political values. Orwell, however, did not gain popularity and fame until his first major novel, Animal Farm, published in Britain in 1945. Today, he is most known for this novel and his later one, Nineteen Eighty-Four.
Animal Farm is a critical novel based on the Russian Revolution and the eventual take-over by Joseph Stalin, derailing the initial goals of the movement. In this novel, a group of farm animals overthrow and oust their oppressive and exploitative farmer with the goal of setting up a prosperous and equal community. Eventually, certain animals gain unequal amounts of power and steer the animal-revolution to create a dictatorship where only they thrive. The post-revolution farm then becomes a replica of the old, unjust system they initially set out to destroy but with new rulers. With the rising popularity of Communism and the general political upheaval of the time, Animal Farm became Orwell’s first major novel and is still hailed as one of his finest works.
