This is a 1938 first edition printing of Listen! The Wind by Anne Morrow Lindbergh, presented in its original dust jacket. The book is inscribed and signed by both author Anne Lindbergh and her husband and famed pilot, Charles A. Lindbergh. The book features a foreword and illustrated map by Charles Lindbergh. The book was published by Harcourt, Brace, New York.
Listen! The Wind tells the story of Anne and Charles Lindbergh's 1933 flight across the Atlantic Ocean, from Africa to South America. The trip was taken in effort to study the navigable air routes across the major oceans. By the 1930’s, flight routes across countries and continents had been plotted, flown, and recorded. Only the oceans remained to be spanned. Over-water distances presented the last major barrier to successful air commerce. The book focuses on the last ten days of the couple’s epic flight, when they faced troubling weather conditions and illness.
The title of Listen! The Wind is inspired by the British poet Humbert Wolfe's poem “Autumn Resignation.” It is purported that when the Lindberghs were waiting for enough wind to start their flight in Gambia, Anne recited two lines from the poem: “Listen! The wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves.”
Listen! The Wind received the National Book Award for Nonfiction. Just like Lindbergh's first book, North to the Orient, Listen! The Wind became a bestseller and was among the ten best selling non-fiction books in the United States for two years in a row.
